We are pleased to announce that Dr. HYUN SOON LEE, Vice Chairman and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Doosan, was recognized as one of the “Persons of Distinguished Service to Science and Technology (과학기술유공자)” by the Center for the Support of Science and Technology Honorees. Dr. Lee received both a Master's degree and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stony Brook University. He began his career at the General Motors Research Institute before joining Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) in 1984. Dr. Lee, who led the independent development of automotive engines and transmissions, was instrumental in developing the first engine (α-Engine) produced by HMC and the development of the β-Engine. During his time at HMC, his responsibilities included the Ulsan Vehicle R&D center along with being the Senior Executive Vice President of the Hyundai and Kia Powertrain Division.
Dr. Lee has received many awards for his contributions to the automotive industry including the IR52 Jang Young Shil Award (1991) from the Minister of Science and Technology, and the Gold Medal for Anti-Pollution Technology Development from the Chosun Daily Newspaper. The Federation of Korean Industries presented Dr. Lee with a Gold Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit. For his leadership, he was awarded the International Management Institute CEO award in 2006, and the Best CTO award from the Korea Industrial technology association in 2008. Dr. Lee left Hyundai Motors after 27 years and moved to Doosan to become the Vice Chairman of the Management Innovation Division.
Dr. Lee serves as the Chair of the Industrial Advisory Board of the Mechanical Engineering Department at SUNY Korea.
