Chair, Department of
Mechanical Engineering
Hamid Hefazi
Thank you for your interest in Mechanical Engineering (ME) program at SUNY Korea. Mechanical Engineering is one of the foundational disciplines of engineering.

It is a broad profession concerned with energy and environment, automobiles aerospace and transportation systems, design and manufacturing as well as emerging technologies such as automation, robotics, autonomous vehicles, space travel, and biomedical systems among many others.

In Mechanical Engineering, sciences are integrated with practical skills such as design activities, computer simulations, modern manufacturing techniques, computer-aided design(CAD) and experimentation, into a dynamic hands-on, practice-oriented discipline.

Mechanical Engineering is one of the largest and most stable professions in industrial countries such as Korea. It is also the most popular among all engineering majors.

The role of mechanical engineers is expected to increase in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4RI) as the demand for new design and manufacturing of machinery and robotics compatible with automation technology, sustainable power technology, modern medical technology, space technology, manufacturing of new generation electronics and AI platforms, etc. increases.  ME graduates will contribute in all these main drivers of 4RI. Many Mechanical Engineers also pursue careers in engineering management and organizational leadership. ME is also an entrepreneurial profession with many opportunities for graduates to establish small businesses or be self-employed in consulting jobs.

Following an American educational model, SUNY Korea’s ME program complements a solid theoretical and technical education with high degrees of emphasis on “professional skills” such as the ability to communicate effectively, teamwork, innovation and entrepreneurship, lifelong learning, and understanding of professional responsibilities and ethical behavior. Our graduates not only understand the theories but also learn how to apply them and address major societal challenges and practical problems. We aim to educate students who, in addition to being technically advanced, have the skill sets to become leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and productive and responsible members of their communities.

The ME program at SUNY Korea is also the first program in the Republic of Korea that is accredited by the US Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) (www.abet.org). Accreditation of engineering programs ensures that the programs produce graduates who are prepared to meet the expectations of employers, the public or pursue further study in engineering or other fields.

Many Stony Brook University (SBU) alumni have been highly successful in Korea, achieving the ranks of cabinet ministers and CEOs of major Korean corporations. Being affiliated with SBU, our students also get a global educational experience by spending a year at SBU. This affiliation and ABET accreditation also make it easier to continue graduate studies in the US for those who would like to pursue this path.
