[ME In-Person Seminar] 2022 Nobel Physics Prize and the Quantum Information Technology @...
Speaker: Dr. Jaewan Kim Date & Time: Wednesday, November 16, 2022, 17:00-18:00 PM in KST Venue: Academic Builing A211 We are pleased to announce that the In-Person Mechanical Engineering Seminar Series will be held online on November 16th, 2022. Dr. Jaewan Kim will give a talk about 2022 Nobel Physics Prize and the Quantum Information Technology. Abstract Aspect, Clauser, and Zeilinger are receiving 2022 Nobel Prize in physics "for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science." In quantum mechanics, physical quantity is not decided until it is measured. Einstein raised questions on this aspect of quantum measurement. He thought physical quantity should be a reality which means that physical quantity should be independent of measurement process. In 1935, Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen (EPR) published a paper claiming quantum theory does not seem to be complete and presented two particles with correlated physical property demonstrating "spooky action at a distance" which is now called in various names; EPR-pair, entangled pair, Bell pair, Bell state and so on. In 1964, John Bell proposed a mathematical inequality which must be satisfied by the measurement on EPR-pairs if there is "local reality" as Einstein and his colleagues suggested. In 1970's, Clauser designed experiments to test Bell's inequality and found that it is violated by Bell pairs. In 1982, Aspect improved the experiment to avoid loopholes in Clauser's experiment and demonstrated Bell's inequality is indeed violated. Since 1990's up until now, Zeilin ger improved the test of Bell's inequality and pioneered many fundamental experiments to test quantum theory including the first quantum teleportation. Einstein's incessant question on quantum theory played an important role in opening the era of quantum information science and technology.

[ME Online Seminar] The Icing Engineering Process @Wednesday, Oct 26, 2022
Speaker: Dr. Guilherme A. Lima da Silva Date & Time: Wednesday, October 26, 2022, 18:00-19:00 PM in KST We are pleased to announce that the online Mechanical Engineering Seminar Series will be held online on October 26th, 2022. Dr. Lima da Silva will give a talk about The Icing Engineering Process. Abstract This lecture shows the icing engineering process with atmospheric conditions, aircraft performance, ice protection systems, and thermal simulation. It offers the integration between aircraft performance simulation and icing simulation studies. The increased drag and decreased lift caused by ice affect the aircraft's performance. On the other hand, icing engineering needs the angle of attack versus calibrated airspeed curve to calculate the impingement and its limits. In addition, the icing needs the Altitude versus Calibrated Airspeed curve to find the most critical glaze icing condition. Regular icing courses rarely show this connection between flight mechanics and icing engineering. However, this interaction between different disciplines significantly affects the design and simulation of ice protection systems. Also, this course presents a brief introduction to icing atmospheric concepts and the icing simulation parameters. In the end, the lecture presents a thermal simulation implemented by the author and its main characteristics. The lecture does not focus on the current or future simulation tools but shows the icing engineering as a whole subject integrated into the airframe. Please find the details below:

A Virtual Model of SUNY Korea Campus
A team of undergraduate MEC students consisting of team leader Jee Won Lee and team members Prince-David Malendele, Hyunseung Cha and Sooyon Chang, under supervision of graduate student Jonathan Boyack and MEC professor Jongseong Brad Choi, have created a virtual model of SUNY Korea campus using a rover and Lidar sensing system. The project is performed in the Mechanical Systems with Intelligence and Computer Vision (MEIC) Laboratory. This video shows a real-time virtual model of SUNY Korea campus that can be used as an Augmented Reality and Metabus environment. The overall goal of the project is to develop autonomous robots using navigation with GPS information. This novel technology will also be developed further for smart city applications such as remote assessment of falling hazards of high-rise buildings in cities. More information about this project can be obtained from Prof. Jongseong Brad Choi .
