The combined graduate/undergraduate team from the PoF lab led by Prof. Changwoon Han—consisting of Jimin Shin, Kent Justine Legada, Jaewon Lee, Juhwan Kim, and Seungil Park—has received an encouragement award at the KSME-LG Future Home Tech Challenge. The title of their award-winning project is "Developing Prognostics Technology of Leakage Detection Sensors for Air Conditioner Refrigerants." This event, co-hosted by LG Electronics and KSME, aimed to recognize innovative projects in electronics. Professor Seungbok Choi, a leading professor in Mechanical Engineering, is a committee member of the Actuator 2024 Conference. This is an international conference and exhibition on new actuator systems and applications. This biennial event takes place in Germany. Dr. Yoon Young Kim will give a talk about Computational Autonomous Synthesis of Creative Robot Mechanisms – Challenge and Response.  Dr. Kim is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Seoul National University.  His research focuses on Elastic Wave and Metamaterials, Autonomous Linkage Design and Structural Topology Optimization, Higher-order Beam Theory and Analysis. 

The 1st ME Open Lab Day, held on September 6, 2023, saw an attendance of 44 undergraduate students, 9 graduate students, and 9 faculty members. This event was designed to welcome both ME undergraduate and graduate students and provide an overview of the various research areas within our department. Professor Jongseong Brad Choi (MEC) has received the Young Scientist Award at PHM Korea 2023 (Korean Society of Prognostics and Health Management), held in July 3-5, 2023, Seoul, South Korea. His talk is entitled "Engineering-Soft-Power engaged visualization analytics and human-machine collaboration remote assessment for large-scale structures".  Please join me in congratulating Prof. Brad Choi!

A research article by Mechanical Engineering Department Professor Yang and postdoctoral researcher Park, along with several co-workers – “Structural Color Generation on Transparent and Flexible Substrates by Nanosecond Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures” – was selected as the cover picture of the journal Advanced Materials Technologies, published on May 24, 2023.    Reference, SUNY Korea Newsroom

  Professor Seung-Bok Choi (MEC) has received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 18th International Conference in Electrorheological Fluids (ERF) and Magnetorheological Suspensions (MRS), held in June 9-122023, Chongqing, China. He started those research fields in 1985 and still actively working on design and control sectors utilizing ERF and MRS such controllable automotive suspension system. And he delivered a plenary lecture at this conference entitled “Design of a new rotary MR damper for suspension system of purpose-built vehicles”.

The Mechanical Engineering Students achieved remarkable success at the 2023 IGC Research Showcase by winning the First Place and Honorable Mention Awards for their outstanding presentation of a research project in poster form. This full-day event included faculty presentations, a competition featuring ninety undergraduate student poster presentations, and concluded with a celebratory reception to commemorate the Showcase.  Team SAS, consisting of Sooho Lee, Sambridha Bhattarai, Artham Bordoloi, and advised by Prof. Corenelius Bradter, achieved First Place in their research project titled "WildEye: Expeditionary Hexapod." Their research aims to establish a connection between humans and wildlife while simultaneously preserving the natural habitat and environment. WildEye offers a host of advantages, including an internal camera for object detection, gyro-sensors, and modular external camera mounts, providing a stable and reliable platform for capturing wildlife footage.   Joonhyeong Kim and advisor Professor Y. Eugene Pak received the Honorable Mention Award for their research titled "Nano Mechanical Modeling of Virus Assembly Process." This research focuses on the mechanical properties of a viral capsid, utilizing the established icosahedral structure study by Casper & Lug, with the aim of gaining insights into potential upcoming epidemics. Pureun Jeong, ME undergraduate student, was awarded with the Best Poster Award for her poster titled “Indoor Navigation System Designed for a Safety of Construction Site” at the Dec 2022 Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers (KSME) Annual Meeting 2022, held in Jeju, South Korea, Nov 9-12, 2023. ​Please join me in congratulating Pureun!

Jonathan Boyack, Ph.D. student in the Mechanical Engineering Department, was awarded the Best Paper Award for his presentation titled "A Real-Time Log Data Analytics-based Electric Vehicle Path Optimization" at Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers (KSME) Annual Meeting 2022, held in Jeju, South Korea, Nov 9-12, 2023.  Please join me in congratulating Jonathan!

    Dr. Joon Sik Lee will give a talk about Micro/Nanoscale Thermal Energy Transport and Application to the Development of a Thermoelectric Material Based on Silicon-Doped Graphene.  Dr. Lee is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Seoul National University. He is also teaching MEC graduate courses at SUNY Korea. His research interests are Micro/Nanoscale heat transfer, renewable energy, and radiative heat transfer.   

We would like to share some good news for our graduate, Henry Nguyen, who just passed the qualifying exam for his Ph.D. program at Northwestern University. His advisor, Prof. Bazant, is one of the last giants in solid mechanics (https://scholar.google.co.kr/citations?hl=ko&user=tJ4t4Q8AAAAJ). The team MEIC (Jonathan Boyakck, Ph.D. student and Ricardo Ortiz and Jee Won Lee, M. S. students) won "2022 Global Product-Service Localization Research Award Competition (2022년 글로벌 제품서비스 현지화 연구회 성과발표회)" and awarded by Incheon Technopark director with a prize of 200k KRW on November 31, 2022. In this competition, MEIC team presented technical and marketing strategies for local companies, which is to serve the local community. Suyoen Lee, Mechanical Engineering M.S. Student, was awarded the "Young Researcher Award" at an International Conference on Materials Reliability (ICMR) in Japan, November 2022.  In this conference, various topics of development, characterization, mechanical analysis, theoretical and experimental reliability analysis, technologies for reliability assessment, and prognostics and health management for various materials, systems and products were presented and discussed.  Please join us in congratulaton Suyeon!
