Computer Science Professor Yoon Seok Yang Secures KRW 4.5 Billion Government Funding for Personalized Epilepsy Seizure Prediction
Professor Yoon Seok Yang of the Department of Computer Science at SUNY Korea is participating in a KRW 4.5 billion government-funded R&D project to develop an AI-powered wearable system for personalized epilepsy seizure detection, classification, and prediction. Running from July 2026 through December 2030, the project has allocated KRW 500 million to SUNY Korea. Led by Oceansbio, the multidisciplinary consortium includes Samsung Medical Center, the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), SUNY Korea, and Soso H&C, bringing together expertise in clinical epilepsy research, wearable biosignal technology, medical AI, and On-Device AI. The project aims to develop a personalized wearable system capable of detecting, classifying, and predicting epileptic seizures using multimodal biosignals, including electroencephalography (EEG), electrocardiography (ECG), photoplethysmography (PPG), and motion data. A key ojective of the project is the implementation of energy-efficient AI models directly on wearable devices. Through low-power On-Device AI, the system is designed to enable real-time seizure monitoring and early warning while minimizing reliance on external computing infrastructure. At SUNY Korea, Prof. Yang and his research team are responsible for developing energy-efficient AI models for seizure detection and prediction, with a particular focus on personalized learning and ultra-low-power On-Device AI for wearable EEG devices. During the first phase, the consortium will focus on developing a Neck-Band EEG device and Galaxy Watch-based Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), together with clinical data collection and validation. The later stages will focus on improving personalized seizure prediction, developing a next-generation In-ear EEG device, and completing clinical validation and regulatory approval. Through this project, Prof. Yang’s team will apply SUNY Korea’s expertise in energy-efficient AI, On-Device AI, and intelligent computing systems to address real-world challenges at the intersection of artificial intelligence, wearable technology, and digital healthcare. Prof. Yoon Seok Yang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at SUNY Korea. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Texas A&M University and previously worked as a Senior Research Scientist at Intel Labs and a Staff Research Engineer at Google. His research focuses on energy-efficient AI, On-Device AI, and intelligent computing systems.
