SUNY Korea ME Department Participates in ‘KSME Annual Meeting 2023’
Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers, KSME, held its annual meeting on November 1st to 4th, 2023 at Songdo Convensia, Incheon. This year’s theme was “Mechanical Engineering Leading the Korean Defense Industry.” The Mechanical Engineering Department at Stony Brook University in SUNY Korea participated in this wonderful opportunity by operating a booth. Five faculty, six graduate students, and seven undergraduate students from the Mechanical Engineering Department attended this conference. Some ME students, mainly graduate and senior students, took part in the poster sessions. Additionally, two ME undergraduate students and several graduate students participated in the presentation section of this conference, where they were able to share what they have researched in the past years. For this year’s conference, 45 companies registered for booths, with over a thousand research papers and presentations being offered. Additionally, KSME Conference 2023 had several sessions such as ME expert review sessions, special lectures, invited speakers’ lectures, KSME-SEMES OIC winners’ presentation and awards, KSME-LG Future Home Tech & Challenge winners’ presentation and awards, and international sessions, including research presentations. These sessions were divided into Korean and international sessions. Written by Student Reporter, Hyeonha Hwang (hyeonha.hwang@stonybrook.edu)

#23 FIT Graduate, Haeun Lee, Embarks on Startup Journey with 'GREENEST'
On Wednesday, October 25th, Haeun Choi, an FIT Alumni, visited SUNY Korea to deliver a talk as part of the FIT Alumni Talk series. During her presentation, she shared her journey, from her educational background to her current role as the CEO of GREENEST, emphasizing her dedication to sustainable fashion, and offering valuable advice to aspiring students and entrepreneurs. Here is an interview with Haeun Choi. 1. Can you introduce yourself? Hello, my name is Haeun Choi, CEO of Greenest, which is a sustainable fashion brand based in South Korea. I got an AAS degree in FIT Korea, and a BS degree in FIT New York campus, both with Summa Cum Laude. I majored in Fashion Business Management. 2. Why did you choose to study at SUNY Korea FIT? The reason I chose SUNY Korea FIT is because it was the most optimal choice for me, as I wanted to gain experience not only in New York but also in the fashion industry in Korea. In fact, to work in the fashion industry, understanding consumer psychology and staying attuned to market trends is crucial. FIT offers the advantage of obtaining both an AAS degree and a BS degree from different countries, which has been very helpful in my current business pursuits. 3. Can you introduce your business and explain how you started it? GREENEST is a fashion brand that promotes responsible and refined fashion while aiming to make sustainable fashion more widely accessible. We prioritize sustainability throughout the entire process, from sourcing raw materials to production and shipping. The brands' collections are a fusion of expert craftsmanship, attention to detail, and classic and elegant silhouettes, all designed to enhance the natural beauty of every person. GREENEST's commitment to sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. "Sustainability is a top priority for GREENEST in every stage of the process, as evidenced by the strong emphasis on sustainability in the design of all our collections, including the materials used and overall design." I had the opportunity to take courses on sustainability and the fashion industry at both FIT Korea campus and FIT New York campus, and I realized that the negative environmental impact of the fashion industry was more significant than I had initially thought. Wanting to make a positive impact within the fashion industry, I aspired to launch a sustainable fashion brand to help realize this goal. 4. In what ways did your academic experience at SUNY Korea FIT and FIT New York influence your ability to manage your own brand? I majored in Fashion Business Management at FIT. As a result, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the fashion industry, learned about textiles as part of my general education, and acquired knowledge in marketing and merchandising, which are essential for running a fashion brand. In particular, during my studies, I engaged in numerous case studies of fashion companies, providing me with indirect experience of the challenges that fashion companies face and the opportunity to propose solutions through various projects. These indirect experiences have proven to be invaluable in running my current brand. 5. How do you cope with fear and doubt in your professional journey? In reality, running a business is often navigating the unknown, and in the early stages, I was frequently plagued by uncertainty and experienced significant emotional fluctuations. However, once I accepted that these uncertainties are something all entrepreneurs encounter, I began to find my anxiety diminishing. I believe that managing these anxieties is also an integral part of entrepreneurship. Trusting in my choices and persevering in the way I've chosen to go, I have faith that I will eventually reach the goals I aspire to achieve. 6. What advice would you offer to students pursuing their academic and professional goals? I hope that you won't hesitate to pursue what you want, even if you lack experience or knowledge. Whether you have a wealth of experience and knowledge or not, continuously learning and growing is a common journey. If you have passion or desire, I encourage you to take the first step without hesitation. And always remember that by giving your best effort in every moment, you will eventually see the fruits of your labor. So, try to do your best at all times.

Stony Brook University Professor Elected 2023 Fellow of American Physical Society
STONY BROOK, NY – October 23, 2023 – The American Physical Society (APS) announced that Derek Teaney, Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University, is among the organization’s 2023 Fellows. This distinction recognizes Professor Teaney as a leading physicist whose research and service as an educator have helped advance the frontiers of science and technology. Professor Teaney’s research involves Quantum Chromodynamics, which describes the nearly massless particles called quarks and gluons that exist within the nucleus of every atom. When nuclei are crashed into each other at high speeds, these particles form an extremely hot and dense state of matter known as quark-gluon plasma, which existed a microsecond after the big bang. Professor Teaney’s work has helped elucidate these collisions, painting a more complete picture of the quark-gluon plasma in the very early universe. Click here to read the original article.

Chalk FIT Celebrates 10 Years
Founded in 2013, Chalk FIT is still going strong 10 years later. And in recognition, “Celebration” is the theme for the chalk pastel murals that wrap FIT’s Goodman and Pomerantz buildings from West 26th Street along Seventh Avenue to West 28th Street. Students in their senior year of the Illustration program are each given a panel of the stone building in which to realize their drawing. Some students collaborated on larger panels; others are the result of individuals. They use a chalk medium donated from a local Blick store that doesn’t damage the buildings’ facades. For this year’s theme, students were prompted to “consider the meaning of the word celebration, and what you want to celebrate in your life, your community, family and/or the world at large.” Students began painting their works on Oct. 16 and were complete by Oct. 20. Many artists share their Instagram handles or other information above their work so you can follow them. You learn more and/or share about your experience @ChalkFIT.

Professor Yoon Seok Yang Takes to the Stage at the Korea Times Forum
Professor Yoon Seok Yang from the Computer Science Department was a featured speaker at the Korea Times Forum: Survival and Growth Strategies in the AI Era, which took place on Wednesday, October 18th, at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry building in Seoul. Professor Yang took part in the initial panel discussion, which focused on the transformative influence of AI technology on human society and addressed the ethical concerns accompanying its advancement. Along with Professor Yang, Uhm Yul, Director General of the Artificial Intelligence Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT, Chang Joong-ho, a professor at Seoul School of Integrated Sciences & Technologies (aSSIST), and Kim Myoung-shin, Principal Policy Officer at LG AI Research were also esteemed participants of the discussion panel. Professor Yang highlighted: “I have worked in Silicon Valley for over ten years, and I was part of the AlphaGo developing team, and all developers say that the AI developing trend is so fast that even they don’t know how and when AI will become the dominant force in the future world. AI innovation holds significant potential across diverse industries. Specifically, it plays a pivotal role in the medical industry, aiding the development of new drugs and medical treatments; contributes to risk assessment and investment analysis within the financial industry; and its language model technologies reshapes operations within the business sector. These advancements all influence our present way of life. When considering the ethical factors, we cannot stop the growth in technological advancement; rather we need to focus on minimizing side effects through regulations. Emphasizing the risk factors is crucial when developing new technologies, and simultaneously, safeguarding personal information must be a paramount concern." Professor Yoon Seok Yang is an assistant professor in the Computer Science department at SUNY Korea, Stony Brook University. Professor Yang completed his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Texas A&M University. Prior to his academic role, he contributed as a research scientist at the Neuromorphic Computing Lab at Intel Labs in California, and worked in Google as a silicon and research engineer in the Tensor Processing Unit. 3rd Annual ICT4D Faculty Panel: The Enabling Possibilities of Digital Development
The Department of Technology and Society held a 3rd forum of “Annual Information and Communications Technologies for Development (ICT4D) Faculty Panel: The Enabling Possibilities of Digital Development” on October 16th, 2023. It was moderated by Dr. Anthony Pennings. Five speakers participated in this event: Dr. James Larson, Dr. Suzana Brown, Dr. Sira Maliphol, Dr. Gayoung Park, and Dr. Mark Whitaker . This forum was obviously a great opportunity for DTS students; however, it was also helpful to students from other departments. It was a chance to interact with a group of DTS professors who are experts in the ICT4D sector. A total of 70 students from various majors took advantage of the opportunity to participate in this forum. After Dr. Pennings’ introduction on the “3rd Annual ICT4D Faculty Panel: The Enabling Possibilities of Digital Development,” each professor provided a short introduction, and then spoke about their personal experiences, research interests, the agenda they have researched, a detailed explanation of the research, examples of student reports, and future research. One commonality amongst the professors is that each mentioned asking students to come up with an approach to technology issues focusing on development. Additionally, they stated that ESG and SDG frameworks are important. ESG refers to the non-financial elements of a company: environment, social, and governance. SDG is an abbreviation for Sustainable Development Goals, also known as Global Goals. Written by Student Reporter, Hyeonha Hwang (hyeonha.hwang@stonybrook.edu)
